A long time ago I posted an SUV with three bumper storage things linked together and then they put brake lights all over the back of it. It looked really dangerous and I hope the CHP did something about it. All that weight going off the hitch swinging around, a vehicle can make quite a bit of force when it changes direction, all focused on that one point. If these people went over an unexpected bump it could cause some shock load downward. I do rigging on shows and my rigging calculations for truss, motors and cables are pretty scary when you introduce just a little shock load, goes up exponentially.

Seriously, its like people don’t know what lever arm is. “but it says I can put 800 lbs on the tongue!” yes, you can put an 800 lbs load on a 6 inch level arm, aka a hitch. double the length of the lever arm, half the load. At what appears 4 feet and assuming 800 tongue weight rated receiver at 6 inches. They are, oh, I would say 4-5 times over the tongue load limit.

Oh for sure, those weigh several hundred pounds I’m sure, even my tandem kayak is 100lbs. It’s a terrible idea, imagine if they got into an accident, lots of terrible things could happen.

I saw one of these hitched to the back of a late W-body Regal at the local Walmart the other day

Except for the fact that FWD American sedans of that generation have  woefully inadequate rear shocks in the interest of passenger comfort thus the car drove with the windshield facing the sky and the muffler dragging on the ground. I don’t know how anyone completed that set up and decided, “Yup, looks driveable!” yet there it was, pulling out onto Broadway Avenue...
